Climate change is continuously gaining in importance on global, national and even regional scale. In addition to the most probable changes and impacts of climate change, options for mitigation and adaptation measures are in focus of the discussion.
Against this background, the Hessian Centre on Climate Change was found and took up operation on October 1st, 2008. It is incorporated into the Hessian Agency for Nature Conservation, Environment and Geology (Hessisches Landesamt für Naturschutz, Umwelt und Geologie, HLNUG).
The centre's main objective is to observe climate change and its various impacts and to proactively prepare necessary adaptation measures. Furthermore, the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions through promotion of innovative technologies and measures is of particular importance.
Comprehensive information on climate change is available in German on the website of the Hessian Centre on Climate Change (Fachzentrum Klimawandel Hessen). Informations on observed and projected climate change in Hesse are given. The German site also provides information about research programmes focussing on climate change and its impacts on Hesse.
The Climate Change Monitor (Klimaschutz-Monitor; in German) provides basic information on climate change and climate change impacts as well as on greenhouse gas emissions of the European Union, Germany and the federal states. It addresses conventions, agreements and programmes concerning climate change on the different administrative levels from international down to the federal states level. Furthermore, selected research projects, institutions and websites referring to climate change are listed.
Conferences and events organised by the Hessian Centre on Climate Change are also documented. Furthermore a survey of institutions and projects being concerned with questions of climate change is presented.
On the following pages, a small selection of the German climate change websites of the Hessian Centre on Climate Change is presented in English. The pages focus on important Hessian activities in the field of climate change and climate change impacts. This includes information on:
